Leaves and the stem bark as wel as the rind around the fruits is diuretic. The juice of bootle gourd is used for ulcers and stomach acidity relief. Crushed leaves as poultice could be also applied to the head for treating headaches. Both leaves and flowers are antidote to poison especially insect bites. Seeds had been described in many practices and vermifuge, boiled seeds are also beneficial for the boils treatment. The plant extract had also shown an antibiotic activity. The high content of potassium and fibre may suggest a very important legume for diabetics. It could be a very regulating legume for the serum glucose concentration in diabetes mellitus patients. The effect of bottle gourd on cholesterol is known and it may have a high antihyperlipidemic activity.
